Investment - Market Structure - Brokered Markets
Brokers facilitate deals between their clients in a brokered market. Brokers build up marketplaces for special assets that appeal to a select group of investors as possible investments. This describes very huge parcels of real estate and securities. These assets are typically expensive to carry in inventory and are exchanged infrequently.

Dealers won't develop markets in securities or real estate because they are frequently unable or unwilling to hold a sizable block of these assets in inventory; in other words, they won't be prepared to purchase or sell these assets if no one else is. For these assets, it makes no sense to set up order-driven markets because not enough traders would place orders.

Brokers who build up markets for special assets make an effort to get to know everyone who might be interested in trading these assets in the future or right now. The majority of these brokers' time is spent developing their clientele over the phone and in meetings.
