Designs
It is possible to register designs that relate to the outward look of an object, but designs that relate only to an object's technical function—that is, how it operates—cannot be registered. The legislative protection that comes with registration might last for up to 25 years. In addition to this, there is something known as statutory unregistered design right, which protects particular aspects of the form or arrangement of products that are meant to be sold in the marketplace. Depending on the specifics of the situation, the duration of this protection can range from ten to fifteen years. However, the majority of nations, including the United States, have enacted laws that expressly relate to designs. In the United States of America, the statute can be found in the Patent Act. The non-functional appearance of the product is all that can be protected by a patent in the United States under the 'design' category. There is no protection afforded to the practical aspects of the items, such as their look or their packaging, nor is there any protection for those aspects.
