An Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) is appointed to represent individuals who lack the capacity to make certain decisions and who have no family or friends to support them. This role is mandated under the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
The IMCA ensures that the individual’s rights, wishes, and best interests are properly considered when serious decisions are made, such as those involving medical treatment or accommodation. The role strengthens procedural fairness and safeguards vulnerable individuals.
