KembaraXtra – Legal Terms – Informer

An informer is a person who provides information to law enforcement authorities about criminal activity committed by others. Informers may act out of civic duty, self-interest, or in exchange for leniency in relation to their own involvement in criminal conduct.

While informers play an important role in crime detection, the law places limits on their use. Police may not encourage informers to commit crimes, and legal complications arise where informers actively participate in criminal plans rather than merely reporting them.
