Inherent vice refers to a natural defect or characteristic within goods that causes them to deteriorate or become damaged without any external cause. Examples include perishable goods that spoil or materials that naturally decay over time.
In transport and insurance law, carriers and insurers are generally not liable for losses caused solely by inherent vice unless they were warned or assumed responsibility for such risks. The concept limits liability where damage is unavoidable due to the nature of the goods themselves.
