KembaraXtra – Legal Terms – Judges’ Rules
The Judges’ Rules were a set of guidelines developed by the courts to regulate how police officers should question and handle suspects during criminal investigations. Although not laws themselves, they were influential in ensuring fairness and preventing improper treatment of suspects.
These rules governed matters such as when a suspect should be cautioned and how confessions should be obtained. However, they have since been replaced by formal statutory provisions, particularly the codes of practice issued under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. These modern codes provide clearer and legally enforceable standards for police conduct.
