Definition

A codon is a sequence of three nucleotide bases in DNA or messenger RNA that carries a specific instruction during protein synthesis. Most codons specify one amino acid, while certain codons signal where translation should begin or end. Because genetic information is read in consecutive groups of three bases, the order of nucleotides determines the sequence of amino acids assembled into a protein. Codons are therefore fundamental units of the genetic code.


Structure and Function

DNA codons are transcribed into corresponding messenger RNA codons, which are then read by ribosomes during translation. Transfer RNA molecules recognize particular codons through complementary anticodon sequences and deliver the appropriate amino acid. A start codon establishes the point and reading frame at which translation begins, whereas stop codons terminate the process. Accurate codon recognition is essential because a shift or substitution in the sequence can alter the resulting protein.


Role in Psychology and Neuroscience

Codons are relevant to psychology because genes influence the development and functioning of the nervous system. Variations in coding sequences can affect receptors, enzymes, ion channels, and other proteins involved in cognition, emotion, and behavior. Behavioral genetics and molecular neuroscience examine how such genetic differences interact with environmental conditions. Codons do not determine complex psychological traits directly, but they contribute to the biological systems on which those traits depend.


Clinical and Research Significance

Mutations affecting codons may be silent, missense, nonsense, or frameshift mutations, depending on how they alter translation. Some mutations have little effect because several codons can specify the same amino acid, whereas others change protein structure or prematurely terminate synthesis. Genetic research uses codon analysis to investigate inherited neurological disorders, psychiatric vulnerability, and pharmacogenetic differences. Interpretation requires caution because most psychological characteristics arise from many genes interacting with development and experience.
