Legal Terms - Ancillary Relief
Financial support or assistance provided to a party in a legal proceeding, typically in the context of divorce or separation.
A court order that is supplementary to another order or application, namely a *financial provision order or a *property adjustment order, issued during legal procedures for divorce, separation, or nullity under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 (or their civil partnership equivalents). The word has become less commonly used because the Family Procedure Rules 2010 now refer to a financial order as an application.
Financial provision or property adjustment orders will only become effective once the divorce order, or any other relevant ruling, has been finalized.
