Legal Terms - Bench
A bench is the actual seat where a judge sits in a court of law. The bench is often situated in a raised position on one side of the courtroom, facing the seats of the lawyers and solicitors.
It also means a panel of judges or magistrates convening in a court, or the entire body of judges as a whole. Therefore, when a lawyer is appointed as a judge, it is commonly referred to as being elevated to the bench.
