Legal Terms - Brain Death
Brain death refers to the permanent cessation of function in the brainstem centers responsible for regulating respiration, heart rate, and other essential reflexes. Brain death can be determined even if the heart continues to beat using a mechanical ventilator. Within the realm of medical legislation, specific challenges arise when a prospective organ donor is being sustained through artificial means. Two separate medical assessments are legally necessary to confirm brain death and allow for the extraction of organs.
