Legal Terms – Canon Law
Canon law, often known as ecclesiastical law, refers to the body of laws and regulations governing the Catholic Church. Church law refers to the legal regulations established by religious institutions, such as the Roman Catholic Code of Canon Law and the law of the Church of England in England. Unless it is later enacted as legislation or established as a tradition, it does not form part of the laws of England. However, it is obligatory for clergy and lay individuals in ecclesiastical positions, such as churchwardens.
