Legal Terms -company name (registered name)
The name of a registered business as it appears on the certificate of incorporation, in the *Register of Companies, and on the application for registration. There are restrictions on the names that firms can register under (see BUSINESS NAME). According to the Companies Act of 2006, Sections 82–85, and the Companies (Trading Disclosure Regulations) of 2008, the name must be displayed prominently outside the *registered office and other commercial premises, upon the company seal, and upon certain papers the company issues, such as notepaper and invoices. It is illegal to disobey, and there may be penalties. Reusing the company name after going into insolvent liquidation may be illegal for directors of companies subject to this legislation (Insolvency Act 1986 § 216).
