Legal Terms -county
n. A first-class *local government unit in Wales or England (excluding Greater London). The Local Government Act of 1972 divided England into six metropolitan and thirty-nine non-metropolitan counties, resulting in 45 counties for England and 8 for Wales. The Local Government Act of 1985 disbanded the metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands, and West Yorkshire and gave district councils general control over their operations. With the passage of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, Wales' local government areas were reformed. As of April 1, 1996, eleven counties and eleven county boroughs, each headed by a single-tier (unitary) council, had replaced all of the previous counties and *districts. Several county areas in England have undergone reorganization as a result of the replacement of *county councils by *unitary authorities.
