A data element integrated into or linked with an electronically transmitted document that serves the purpose of a written signature. The Electronic Communications Act 2000 acknowledges electronic signatures as valid in legal proceedings and confers upon them legal significance. The e-IDAS Regulation (910/2014) in the EU superseded the previous Electronic Signatures Directive (1999/93/EC) as of July 2016, governing electronic identity and trust services for electronic transactions within the internal market. This has been incorporated into UK legislation and modified by the Electronic Identification and Trust Services for Electronic Transactions (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019.
