Legal Terms - Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
refers to the utilization of electronic data transmission networks to exchange business information through standardized messages, requiring minimal or no human participation. EDI is predominantly utilized by major corporations to establish a standardized processing system for documents such as invoices and purchase orders. Substantial commercial contracts delineate the conditions under which such information is provided, and a considerable amount of commerce is conducted on this foundation (referred to as paperless trading), either via a closed network accessible just to a restricted group of members or through the Internet. Several international legal regulations have been established in this domain, including the Uniform Rules of Conduct for the Interchange of Trade Data via Teletransmission (see to UNCID). Both parties utilizing EDI must conform to identical standards for the delivery of data segments.
