The use of telephone tapping, concealed microphones (bugging), cameras, or analogous methods to acquire evidence. Evidence gained by telecommunications interception is generally inadmissible at trial in England; however, evidence acquired via alternative methods of electronic surveillance may be permissible. The Police Act 1997 establishes a framework wherein independent police commissioners supervise the protocols and examine grievances concerning intrusive surveillance operations.
