A commitment, either spoken or documented, to enter into matrimony at a later period. Such agreements are no longer regarded as enforceable legal contracts, and no legal action can be initiated for breach of such an agreement or to recover expenses incurred due to the agreement. Engagement rings are considered irrevocable presents and cannot be reclaimed upon the dissolution of an engagement.
