The utilization of invasive enteral tubes or parenteral injections to sustain the life of a patient. Medical ethics involves extensive deliberation over the circumstances in which medical care can be withheld or discontinued for patients who have little chance of recovery, particularly for patients who are incapable of expressing their preferences. When other intense treatments are deemed ineffective, artificial nourishment and hydration are considered remarkable methods of extending life. From a legal standpoint, it is acceptable to discontinue such medical treatment when it is no longer beneficial for the patient and when the aim is not to cause the patient's death, even though this may be the unavoidable outcome (as per the theory of twofold effect). If a patient is in a persistent vegetative state, the issue must be brought before the courts.
