functus officio [Latin: having fulfilled his duties] Characterizing an individual who has fulfilled their responsibilities and whose position or authority has concluded. Upon rendering a judgment, the judge is functus officio: he possesses no authority to amend his decision, which can solely be contested by other judges in subsequent appellate courts.
