Reasonable funeral expenditures are the first levy on the deceased's assets, payable from the estate before any other debt or duty. This covers the expense of a tombstone or gravestone (Stanton v Ewart F. Youlden Ltd [1960] 1 WLR 543; HMRC Statement of Practice SP7/87). Such expenditures are deductible in the computation of inheritance tax (Inheritance Tax Act 1984 § 172).
