An arrest warrant that lacks identification or description of the individual to be apprehended, or a search warrant that fails to delineate the premises to be searched or the items sought. Such warrants are typically unlawful, although they may occasionally be explicitly sanctioned by statute (see to power of search). An anyone apprehended under an unlawful general warrant may seek compensation for false incarceration. Occasionally, Parliament confers a general authority to arrest during the execution of a search warrant, as exemplified by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963.
