A dog specifically kept to protect people or property. Under the Guard Dogs Act 1975, it is a summary offence to use or allow the use of a guard dog unless it is securely restrained or controlled by a handler. Civil and criminal liability for injuries caused by the dog remain governed by tort law and, in severe cases, may amount to manslaughter by gross negligence.
