This convention regulates intercountry adoption, ensuring that adoptions involving different nations are conducted ethically, transparently, and in the best interests of the child.
Each signatory country must establish a central authority responsible for overseeing the process. In the UK, there are separate authorities for England, Wales, and Scotland.
These authorities exchange information between the child’s country of origin and the receiving country, verify the eligibility of prospective adopters, and help coordinate counselling and post-adoption support.
