Legal Terms– Hague Rules
International regulations defining the rights and liabilities of sea carriers under bills of lading.
Originally drafted in 1921 by the International Law Association and enacted in the UK via the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1924, they are known as the Hague Rules 1924.
They were later amended to become the Hague-Visby Rules (1968) and updated again under the Hague-Visby/SDR Protocol (1979).
In 1978, the Hamburg Rules replaced them in some jurisdictions, significantly reducing the legal advantages previously granted to carriers
