Legal Terms - Hazardous Waste

Any waste material deemed dangerous to human health or the environment due to its chemical, biological, or reactive properties.
Governed by the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 (amended in 2009), these rules implement the EU’s Revised Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC).
Hazardous waste includes materials such as toxic chemicals, solvents, asbestos, and contaminated industrial by-products.
Strict controls regulate its generation, transport, treatment, and disposal to prevent pollution and protect public safety.
Producers must label, document, and report hazardous waste activities under supervision from the Environment Agency.
