Legal Terms – Health Service Commissioners (Health Service Ombudsmen)
Independent officers empowered to investigate complaints about the NHS, including those against GPs, dentists, pharmacists, and opticians.
They derive authority from the Health Service Commissioners Act 1993.
Complaints must be submitted within one year of discovery. Certain matters, such as alleged professional negligence, are excluded from investigation.
In England, this function is held by the Parliamentary Ombudsman; in Wales and Scotland, equivalent offices handle health-related complaints
