Legal Terms – High Court of Justice
Established by the Judicature Acts of 1873–1875, the High Court is one of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
It handles:
- Civil claims exceeding £100,000 (or £50,000 for personal injury).
- Specialized cases requiring expert judges (e.g., Commercial Court).
- Matters that must legally begin in the High Court.
The court also has appellate jurisdiction. It is divided into three main divisions:
- Queen’s Bench Division (civil disputes and judicial review),
- Chancery Division (equity, trusts, and company law),
- Family Division (family and probate matters).
It represents one of the highest levels of first-instance jurisdiction in English law.
