Legal Term – High Hedges
A legal issue concerning overgrown hedges (over two metres tall) that negatively affect a neighbour’s enjoyment of property.
Under Section 65 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, residents can file a complaint with their local authority.
The council may issue a remedial notice requiring the hedge to be reduced in height, and may charge a fee for the service.
Complainants must show they have tried to resolve the issue amicably first, as frivolous claims can be dismissed.
The provision helps balance property rights with community harmony.
