Legal Terms-High Seas
Defined in the 1958 Geneva Convention on the High Seas as all parts of the sea outside a state’s territorial or internal waters. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982) guarantees freedom of navigation, fishing, and scientific research on the high seas for all nations. The UK courts have jurisdiction over offences committed on British ships anywhere on the high seas and on British-controlled aircraft in flight
