Legal Terms-Historic Buildings
Historic buildings are properties recognized for their architectural, cultural, or historical significance and are protected under planning and heritage legislation.
In the UK, such structures may be formally designated as listed buildings under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
- Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest.
- Grade II* buildings are particularly important and of more than special interest.
- Grade II buildings are of national importance and special interest.
Owners of listed buildings must obtain listed building consent before carrying out alterations, extensions, or demolitions that affect their character. Unauthorized changes are criminal offences.
The protection extends to historic gardens, monuments, and conservation areas, with oversight by Historic England and local authorities.
