Legal Terms – House of Commons
The elected chamber of the UK Parliament, also known as the Lower House. It consists of 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) representing single-member constituencies: 543 in England, 57 in Scotland, 32 in Wales, and 18 in Northern Ireland. Boundaries are periodically reviewed by Boundary Commissions to reflect population changes.
Certain groups—such as civil servants, active members of the armed forces, bankrupt individuals, and convicted prisoners—are disqualified from election under the House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975. The Speaker, elected by MPs, presides over proceedings with impartiality, while a Leader of the House (a government minister) organizes its business.
