Human rights are the fundamental freedoms and entitlements owed to every person, irrespective of nationality or status. These rights are often safeguarded under international treaties and conventions, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), although that declaration itself is not legally binding.
Legally enforceable rights arise under the 1966 International Covenants—the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Regional frameworks, such as the European Convention on Human Rights, also provide mechanisms for individuals to bring claims for violations. While some scholars link human rights to natural law, in modern practice they are primarily expressed through treaty law
