Legal Terms - The ACP Group
The ACP Group refers to the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group. The African, Caribbean, and Pacific states are united by their association.
Georgetown Agreement of 1975, excluding Cuba, and the Cotonou Agreement with the EU in 2000. The Agreement, which encompasses matters such as foreign aid, commerce, investment, human rights, and governance, replaced the Lomé Convention, which did not include provisions for human rights and governance. As of 2021, there are a total of 79 signatories. The Agreement removed the one-sided trade privileges that the European Union had with the countries of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) under the Lomé Convention. Instead, it established economic cooperation agreements that included mutual obligations. The objective is to establish unrestricted entry to markets between the European Union (EU) and the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries. The Agreement also stipulates that the ACP least-developed countries (LDCs) will receive distinct treatment compared to ACP non-LDCs.
