The symptoms of dyssentery closely resemble those induced by Salmonella. Hepatic abscesses and sepsis are complications. Reactive polyarthritis is a significant sequela that is predominantly observed in individuals carrying the HLA B27 haplotype.

Invasion of the host cell and generation of a heat-stable enterotoxin constitute the principal pathogenic mechanisms.
Fluid replacement and treatment are crucial, just as they are for any diarrheal illness. Antibiotics like gentamicin and tetracycline can be employ to treat severe illnesses.
