Infectious Diseases and Microbiology - "Whooping" Cough ( Bordetella pertussis)
An example of a small gram-negative coccobacilli is Bordetella pertussis.
The respiratory infection known as B pertussis is extremely infectious and is transmitted through airborne droplets.
Clinically relevant

A substance that causes whooping cough infection. During the first "cold-like" stage of this two-stage disease, the disease is at its most infectious.
Paroxysmal coughing, profuse mucus production, and tiredness are traits that are associated with the second stage of the illness.

There are a variety of virulence factors that are carried by B pertussis, and these factors collaborate to induce disease. Both filamentous hemagglutinin (Fha) and pertussis toxin (Ptx) play a role in the attachment process to ciliated respiratory epithelial cells. In order to disrupt the usual mechanisms that are responsible for respiratory clearance, at least three toxins operate together. Ptx is an A-B toxin that has the ability to promote lymphocytosis and has ADP-ribosylating activity. Its mechanism of action is comparable to that of cholera toxin.
One type of bacterial adenylate cyclase is called cyclolysin. The combination of Ptx and cyclolysin causes an increase in mucus secretion and a rise in the amounts of cAMP found inside the cell. The peptidoglycan fragment known as tracheal cytotoxin is responsible for the process of ciliostasis.

A specialized medium is required for the isolation of B pertussis.
Antibiotics like erthromycin are efficient in lowering the amount of germs that are present in the body. Additionally, it may be necessary to provide supportive care, which may include suctioning of respiratory mucus and providing supplemental oxygen. For the purpose of prevention, immunization is administered either with organisms that have been killed or with an acellular vaccine that is directed against Fha and Ptx. A combination of the pertussis vaccine and the toxoids of diphtheria and tetanus (DTP) vaccine is typically offered to the patient.
