Aberration, in optics, refers to a flaw or imperfection in the image produced by an optical device such as a lens. In chromatic aberration, coloured fringes appear around an image because different colours of light are refracted to varying degrees. In spherical aberration, the image becomes blurred because light rays passing through the outer edges of a lens are bent more than those passing through the centre, causing them to focus at slightly different points. This effect can occur even when only one colour of light is used.
