Abreaction is the therapeutic release of strong emotions linked to previously repressed memories. In earlier psychiatric practice, therapists sometimes helped patients recall buried experiences—occasionally using hypnosis—allowing emotional tension and anxiety to be discharged. This method is now largely obsolete in modern psychiatric treatment.
