KembaraXtra - Medical Terms - abruptio placentae (placental abruption) Abruptio placentae, or placental abruption, is a serious condition in which a normally positioned placenta partially or completely detaches from the uterine wall after the 24th week of pregnancy. It causes bleeding and may develop suddenly, sometimes progressing from a small antepartum haemorrhage to a major emergency with complications such as disseminated intravascular coagulation. It is often associated with high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia.
