Acanthosis refers to thickening of the skin due to an increased number of prickle cells in the epidermis. Acanthosis nigricans presents with darkened, velvety thickened skin, commonly in the armpits, neck, and groin, and may be associated with internal malignancy. Pseudoacanthosis nigricans is more commonly linked to obesity and insulin resistance.
