An acrocentric chromosome is a type of chromosome in which the centromere—the region where the two arms of the chromosome join—is located very close to one end. This position results in one very short arm and one much longer arm.

Acrocentric chromosomes are a normal structural form found in the human genome. In humans, several chromosomes, including chromosomes 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22, are classified as acrocentric. Their distinctive structure plays a role in genetic organization and may also be relevant in certain chromosomal rearrangements or genetic disorders.
