Addison’s disease is a chronic condition caused by insufficient production of corticosteroid hormones due to damage or destruction of the adrenal cortex. This leads to progressive symptoms such as fatigue, low blood pressure, dehydration, and salt imbalance.
A characteristic feature may include darkening of the skin. While tuberculosis was once a common cause, most cases today are due to autoimmune destruction of the adrenal glands. Treatment involves lifelong hormone replacement therapy with medications such as hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone.
