Virtually all organs and tissues in the body perform actions that help maintain the composition of the extracellular fluid in a generally stable state, a condition is referred to as homeostasis. Extracellular Fluid Transport and Mixing System—The Circulatory System Extracellular fluid is disseminated throughout the body in two phases. The initial stage involves the circulation of blood throughout the circulatory system, while the subsequent stage pertains to the exchange of fluid between the blood capillaries and the cells. The circulatory system maintains the constant mixing of internal fluids by propelling blood through the vascular system. As blood traverses the capillaries, a significant volume of its fluid diffuses into and out of the interstitial fluid situated between the cells, facilitating ongoing exchange of chemicals among the cells, the interstitial fluid, and the blood.
Source of Nutrients in the Extracellular Fluid
• The respiratory system supplies oxygen to the body and expels carbon dioxide. • The gastrointestinal system processes food and assimilates various nutrients, including carbohydrates, fatty acids, and amino acids, into the extracellular fluid. • The liver alters the chemical structure of many absorbed substances into more utilizable forms, while other body tissues (e.g., adipose cells, kidneys, endocrine glands) assist in modifying or storing these substances until required.
• The musculoskeletal system comprises skeletal muscles, bones, tendons, joints, cartilage, and ligaments. In the absence of this mechanism, the body would be unable to relocate to the necessary locations to acquire essential nutrients. This system offers protection for internal organs and structural support for the body.
Elimination of Metabolic Byproducts
The respiratory system supplies oxygen to the extracellular fluid and eliminates carbon dioxide, which is generated by cells, transferred from the blood to the alveoli, and subsequently expelled into the external environment. The kidneys eliminate the majority of waste products excluding carbon dioxide. The kidneys are crucial in regulating the composition of extracellular fluid by managing the excretion of salts, water, and waste products.

The hormonal systems regulate numerous metabolic functions of cells, including growth, metabolic rate, and reproductive activity. Hormones are released into the bloodstream and transported to tissues throughout the body to regulate cellular function.

• The integumentary system, primarily consisting of skin, affords protection against injury and foreign invaders, as well as safeguarding underlying tissues from dehydration. The integumentary system additionally functions to regulate thermoregulation.
Reproductive processes
The reproductive system facilitates the creation of new individuals akin to ourselves. This can also be seen as a homeostatic function, as it produces new organisms that can sustain trillions of more cells inside a meticulously regulated internal environment.
