Pathology - Bronchiolitis
Pathophysiology Like in this instance, smoking may also be linked to interstitial or restrictive diseases like pulmonary bronchiolitis. Pulmonary function tests reveal that the onset of tachypnea, characterized by short breaths and inspiratory rhonchi, is consistent with a restricted airway condition. In restrictive diseases, smaller breaths are observed because the inspiration effort is reduced. A CT scan reveals a broad inflammatory infiltrate between the tiny bronchioles, but the lack of fibrotic alterations, or honeycombing, shows that some lung tissue remains intact. This clinical picture indicates that the predicted outcome is the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs and smoking cessation.
