Antipsychotic medication. Useful in treating both positive and negative symptoms. Method of Operation In the mesolimbic and mesocortical pathways, the modification of dopaminergic transmission. However, aripiprazole also exhibits partial agonist action, which may be the reason for its low frequency of EPS. Aripiprazole has a significant binding affinity for dopamine D2 receptors. Adverse Effects There are less adverse effects compared with many other antipsychotics, such as mild EPS (some akathisia), less weight gain, significantly less antimuscarinic, and significantly less prolactin production. Some hypotension, nausea, and vomiting are also present.
