Pharmacology - Calcitriol
The levels of calcium and phosphate in the serum are increased.

Method of Operation
Calcitriol exerts its influence on receptors that are members of the steroid superfamily of receptors, thereby producing mediator proteins that enhance the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestines and reduce the amount of these substances that are eliminated by the kidneys.

When used orally, it requires bile salts in order to be absorbed. It is possible to administer it through intravenous injection. The levels of creatinine, phosphate, and calcium in the serum should be monitored.

Use in Clinical Settings
These conditions include osteodystrophy of chronic renal failure, which is caused by a reduction in calcitriol, and osteoporosis that occurs after menopause.

Adverse Effects
A hypercalcemic state can be brought on by excessive consumption; if this condition continues, renal calculi may develop.
