Pharmacology - Magnesium Sulfate
There is a purgative action of magnesium sulfate.
Method of Operation
These drugs have a low absorption rate, which causes an increase in the osmotic load inside the lumen of the gut. This results in the retention of water that has been absorbed as well as the removal of water from the bloodstream. Because of the increased amount of uid, movement along the stomach is encouraged. Purgation takes place within two hours.
Use in Clinical Settings
MgSO4 is used for bowel cleansing prior to surgical procedures or examinations. Macrogols and lactulose are used to treat constipation.
After two to three days, the effects of lactulose become apparent.
Effects That Are Bad
Abdominal cramps. Low absorption results in a limited number of systemic activities.
