How Nevirapine Works: It stops the AIDS virus's HIV reverse transcriptase from working. It works on HIV-1 but not on HIV-2. How it works It binds to the virus reverse transcriptase enzyme and breaks it down. Given by mouth; the level in the cerebrospinal fluid is 45% of the level in the plasma. Use in Medicine HIV-1 infection while taking other antiretrovirals. Can cut the risk of passing the virus from mother to baby by about 50%. Bad Side Effects Harm to the liver. Itchy skin, Stevens-Johnson syndrome. GIT problems and myalgia are less common. Effavirenz can make it hard to sleep and think.
