Pharmacology - Nicotinic Acid
Improves HDL levels. Decreases the production of plasma triglycerides and decreases the release of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) from the liver, which ultimately leads to a reduction in the levels of plasma triglycerides and LDL. It is taken orally and eliminated through the urine. Use in Clinical Settings As a supplement to a statin in the treatment of dyslipidemia or in situations when a statin is not recommended Negative consequences In addition to rashes and pruritus, vasodilation (accompanied by a painful flushing) is also present. Palpitations, dyspnea, headache, giddiness, and peripheral oedema are symptoms that occur less frequently. The liver's function, glucose tolerance, and the development of gout can all be negatively impacted by high doses of the substance. Its clinical application may be restricted due to unintended effects. It is possible that pretreatment with ibuprofen will lessen the flushing.
