Action of Primaquine 
Eliminates liver hypnozoites. Destroys gametocytes.

 The half-life of this orally administered drug is three to six hours, and it is promptly metabolized.

Medical Application
In order to eradicate the exo-erythrocytic stage of P. vivax and P. ovale, hence curing the infection radicaly. As an adjunct to chloroquine for the treatment of acute attacks.

Potential Side Effects 
gastrointestinal (GI) problems and hemoglobinemia caused by dose. In patients who have genetic glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), it leads to hemolytic anemia.
