An action of the slow blood schizonticide Action Process Prevents the malaria parasite from producing thymidylate by blocking its enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Orally administered, the half-life is sixteen hours. Medical Application To prevent malaria, typically in conjunction with chloroquine. In certain areas, proguanil + atovaquone is utilized for both falciparum malaria therapy and chemoprophylaxis. Potential Side Effects Very few because the medicine does not block the host's DHFR. Uncommon: gastrointestinal (GI) issues, redness, oral ulcers, thinning hair.
